I rented an SUV (Ford Expedition) from Avis Austin TX Airport (AUS) this December. I paid full premium services and insurance at check in to ensure that I would not have any issues or surprise fees on this business trip. I returned the vehicle back on time, filled with full tank of gas, and in the same condition it was provided to me. There were no issues when the car was returned.

A few days later, Avis sent me an additional bill for $450 cleaning fee! See images posted and judge for yourself.

Avis stated that there was excessive damage the the vehicle that they had to clean. I requested proof of the 'damage' and they sent me the images that you can see in this post. They are literally charging me for water marks on the dash that they left from cleaning the car and some grass strands on the floor mats! It is hard to accept the boldness of this company to pull something off like this. I don't want to call it a scam but it sure feels this way.

I am still fighting this on the grounds of principle and not monetary purposes. This is simply wrong and a waste of time for both parties. Moving forward I will do everything I can to ensure our company cuts full ties with Avis as a business.

Please avoid this rental car company at all cost - even paying there higher tier services will not save you from audacious hidden fees.

I’m Avis Preferred Plus, I reserved my car and paid for it up front. When I arrived to Avis to pick up my rental, I was told they didn’t have the vehicle I’d paid for to reserve. The Avis employee didn’t have a clue as to company policies and told me even though I paid money to reserve a specific vehicle, it doesn’t mean a thing. Which I found to be pretty ridiculous. She was very rude and unprofessional.

Once I was issued a vehicle, we got in it and realized they had never cleaned it. The floor boards were filthy, drivers panels were greasy, battery was at 74% and the car smelled funny. The windows had slimy baby hand prints all over them. The exterior was filthy with two big scratches in the door. Tires/wheels were dirty and seats had splatter marks or stains on them as well. To top it off the vehicle would not charge properly extending our trip into the middle of the night. I also returned the car and the $250 hold has still not been removed from my account.

Terrible.

SINCE ORIGINAL REVIEW
1-15-24 Since posting my original review Avis responded saying they would love for me to connect with them in order to address my issues with my last rental. After sending the rep ‘Susan’ an email per her request, they replied with a ‘certificate’ for future use but there was no certificate attached to the email. Likely play for a rental car company that can’t do something as basic as clean their fleet after each rental. Pathetic excuse for a major American company

Rented a car in November. Got the return receipt and nothing noted as far as damages. A month and a half later I get an email saying I'll be charged $363 for "damages". I emailed asking what this generic damage charge was and they sent back some string of words that I interpreted as needing to replace an entire tire for damage. I replied asking for proof I caused the damage (there was none) saying that the tires were in perfectly fine condition when it was returned and why this is happening a month and half later and still have not received a response. Avoid Avis, they will scam you and I will never rent another car from them.

Austin Texas airport branch says it closes at 1am, but at 12:15am there was no one there to help pick up the car. The car was dirty, had several bumps, its battery was dead and road assistance couldn’t help because it was not outside the facility.. So after expending almost an hour trying to fix stuff and reach people for help, I ended up taking an uber to go to my hotel (1hr drive) and come back next day (extra 1hr) to try to get a car. After explaining the pain and almost 3hrs of my time wasted, only thing I got was a car upgrade and a reimbursement for the uber drives (to go to hotel and then back to airport from restorant, because the $4 to go from hotel to restaurant to have lunch was not covered.. like if I would have spent those bucks having a functional car..). The car I finally got had a tire which was losing air so 3 days later I had to call for road assistance which oriented me to use the tire service kit to try fixing the tire (just another extra hour). I have been a preferred customer for 5 years and this experience was terrible for say the least. The overall process was me trying to figure out what to do, where to go, without anyone to provide support, and when finally chatting with someone over the phone, there’s no protocol in place to easily assign a new car if the reserved one has a malfunction. How can it be that if a customer does a reservation a week ago, and the car is dead, the customer will end up wasting lots of time struggling and having to take an uber? And after that, the only courtesy to give for all the pain is a car upgrade? Not even a spaceship would have been enough to compensate the hard time, time wasted, exposing my family to take an uber at 1:30am for a one hour drive, etc.

I picked up a car yesterday and everything was great in terms of counter service. They assigned me a car and when I got to it in the garage I noticed there was writing on the wondow stating the tire pressure was low (see pic) which i thought was odd but figured they must have known what they were sending me to and maybe they just forgot to wipe off the writing after addressing the tire pressure - so I got in and then noticed a weird smell but thought maybe it was just my nose being sensitive. Now it's become extremely clear to me that they assigned me a car that had not been cleaned or checked. That smell I mentioned kept getting worse today and while trying to figure out what it was I lifted the median compartment of the center console to find someone's old, rotting Starbucks Frappuccino sitting there. Absolutely gag-inducing.
